Recently, government officials have been receiving lawsuits based on the premise that they are intentionally blocking accounts on social media platforms that contradict their opinion. Numerous accounts have been brought up to the U.S. Supreme Court in protest that public officials have the right to block cases due to the First Amendment.
The public officials, including Donald Trump and James Freed, have both faced lawsuits regarding blocking specific accounts from their social media pages. The public officials argue that their own personal opinions and actions that should not be sued. Whereas, the plaintiffs refute that if the government owns the social media account, it is not a Frst Amendment right to restrict other accounts from making comments.
These lawsuits will have an everlasting impact on the judicial world considering the rise of popularity of social media in recent years. The ultimate decision of the U.S. Supreme Court is currently undecided. However, the decision will dictate the future of First Amendment rights for the government, and public officials. I firmly believe that public officials should have the right to restrict accounts on their social media page:it is a human right to be able to take actions regarding your social appearance.
