Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida, has banned gender-affirming care for minors in the state he governs. This law serves as an addition to DeSantis’ “Don’t Say Gay” bill in 2022. The bill was passed with ease, as Republicans hold heavy majorities in all chambers.
In addition to banning gender-affirming care for minors, laws and policies regarding gender-specific bathrooms, drag shows, and school curriculum were passed as well.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, eighteen states have passed laws or policies that have passed a law or policy banning gender-affirming care up to age 18. In addition, eight or more states are considering doing the same.
According to DeSantis, "This will permanently outlaw the mutilation of minors.” Many conservatives have agreed with his stance, while many liberals are outraged with the decision. Decisions and policies like these continue to spark controversy around the nation. Many individuals think religion, which often plays a large factor in these kinds of laws and policies, played too big of a role.
Democratic Representative Marie Paule Woodson expresses concern about the passing of these laws, stating that “Trans people are already dealing with the feeling of not feeling wanted, not being accepted, not being loved, not belonging. Do we want to treat them like they are worthless?”
